Como parte del equipo de la Coalici\u00f3n Europea para Personas con Obesidad (ECPO), que ostenta con orgullo el papel de <strong>Paciente L\u00edder<\/strong> para el proyecto europeo CarePath, utilizamos esta poderosa sesi\u00f3n para destacar c\u00f3mo CarePath aborda activamente esta transici\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dej\u00e9 Estambul con un profundo sentimiento de optimismo y una impaciencia urgente. Es hora de construir puentes entre la investigaci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica de primer nivel y la vida cotidiana de las personas a las que afecta. En mi funci\u00f3n de representante de ECPO dentro del consorcio, me dedico a asegurar que esta traducci\u00f3n se lleve a cabo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aprehensi\u00f3n pol\u00edtica y estigma cotidiano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A trav\u00e9s de mi trabajo como l\u00edder de la Asociaci\u00f3n Noruega de Personas con Obesidad (LFO) y mi participaci\u00f3n en la ECPO, soy testigo a diario de c\u00f3mo la sociedad trata a las personas con obesidad y afecciones cardiometab\u00f3licas relacionadas. Vemos un silencio pol\u00edtico ensordecedor y aprensi\u00f3n en torno a uno de los mayores desaf\u00edos de salud p\u00fablica de nuestro tiempo. Con demasiada frecuencia, las afecciones biol\u00f3gicas complejas se reducen a narrativas simplistas sobre la \u201cprevenci\u00f3n\u201d y las elecciones de estilo de vida individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Es esta profunda injusticia, el estigma cotidiano y las rutas fragmentadas para los pacientes las que ahora estamos abordando directamente. Debemos alejarnos permanentemente de la culpabilizaci\u00f3n individual hacia soluciones estructurales.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuertes interconexiones de salud<\/strong>La salud metab\u00f3lica y la cardiovascular est\u00e1n profundamente enlazadas. La obesidad rara vez ocurre de forma aislada; est\u00e1 estrechamente entrelazada con el desarrollo de diabetes tipo 2 y enfermedades cardiovasculares. Esto exige v\u00edas de atenci\u00f3n sanitaria unificadas, no intervenciones aisladas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Continuidad de la atenci\u00f3n<\/strong>Si bien los tratamientos m\u00e9dicos modernos ofrecen nuevas oportunidades revolucionarias, las intervenciones cl\u00ednicas por s\u00ed solas no pueden resolverlo todo. La necesidad apremiante es crear v\u00edas de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica sostenibles y entornos de apoyo que permitan la continuidad a largo plazo de la atenci\u00f3n en la vida diaria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CarePath: Alinear el Mapa con el Terreno<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En el \u00e1mbito acad\u00e9mico y la investigaci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica, a menudo se elaboran hermosos mapas. Pero para m\u00ed, el trabajo de proyecto no se trata de modelos te\u00f3ricos; se trata de integrar directamente el terreno real que los pacientes navegan en los sistemas de investigaci\u00f3n y atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica. <strong>El mapa debe alinearse con el terreno<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esta es exactamente la brecha que CarePath pretende cerrar. Fundada por el <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihi.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Iniciativa Innovadora de Salud (IHI)<\/a>, nuestro consorcio est\u00e1 desarrollando un kit de herramientas digital, flexible y centrado en la persona, de \u201cconectar y usar\u201d. El proyecto tiene como objetivo empoderar a las personas para que naveguen por su viaje de salud en sus propios t\u00e9rminos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahora pasamos a la siguiente fase del proyecto, donde se implementar\u00e1n estudios piloto en toda Europa. Las experiencias, la pericia y los valiosos conocimientos compartidos por las organizaciones de pacientes en Estambul \u2014y consolidados durante nuestro propio simposio de la ECPO\u2014 formar\u00e1n la base misma de esta fase de prueba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La salud es mucho m\u00e1s que el peso. Discussions among healthcare professionals, researchers, and patient organizations left no room for doubt: healthcare systems must stop treating chronic conditions in a fragmented, piecemeal manner.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>This shift was a core focus at <strong>ECPO\u2019s patient-centred symposium, \"Input to Impact \u2013 Patients as Risk Managers, not just storytellers\"<\/strong>. As part of the team at the European Coalition for People Living with Obesity (ECPO), which proudly holds the role of <strong>Patient Lead<\/strong> for the European CarePath project, we used this powerful session to highlight how CarePath actively addresses this transition.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I left Istanbul with a deep sense of both optimism and urgent impatience. It is high time we build bridges between top-tier medical research and the actual daily lives of the people it affects. In my role representing ECPO within the consortium, I am dedicated to ensuring this translation happens.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Political Apprehension and Everyday Stigma<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Through my work as leader of the Norwegian Association for People Living with Obesity (LFO) and my involvement with ECPO, I witness daily how individuals with obesity and related cardiometabolic conditions are met by society. We see a deafening political silence and apprehension surrounding one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. All too often, complex biological conditions are reduced to simplistic narratives about \"prevention\" and individual lifestyle choices.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>It is this deep injustice, the everyday stigma, and the fragmented patient pathways that we are now directly confronting. As we emphasized during our symposium, patients possess critical expertise that must actively manage risks in healthcare systems, rather than just serving as emotional anecdotes.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><em>Living with a chronic condition is about far more than medication \u2013 it is a daily, human experience that requires deep understanding, accessible tools, and a guarantee that the patient\u2019s voice is actually heard.<\/em><br>\u2014 <strong>Mari-Mette Graff<\/strong>, representing ECPO as Patient Lead in CarePath<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three Key Lessons From Istanbul<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The insights from ECO 2026 and the dialogue driving our \u00abInput to Impact\u00bb session underscore three vital principles that define the path forward for European healthcare:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>A complex biological reality:<\/strong> Obesity is fully recognized as a chronic, relapsing disease that requires long-term, medical, and holistic support over time. We must move permanently away from individual blame toward structural solutions.<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>Strong health interconnections<\/strong>: Metabolic and cardiovascular health are deeply linked. Obesity rarely occurs in isolation; it is closely intertwined with the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This demands unified healthcare pathways, not isolated interventions.<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>Continuity of care<\/strong>: While modern medical treatments offer ground-breaking new opportunities, clinical interventions alone cannot solve everything. The pressing need forward is creating sustainable healthcare pathways and supportive environments that enable long-term continuity of care in daily life.<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CarePath: Aligning the Map with the Terrain<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In academia and medical research, beautiful maps are often drawn. But for me, project work is not about theoretical models; it is about bringing the real terrain that patients navigate directly into research and healthcare systems. <strong>The map must align with the terrain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>This is exactly the gap CarePath aims to bridge. Foundedby the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihi.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Innovative Health Initiative (IHI)<\/a>, our consortium is developing a flexible, person-centered, digital \"plug-and-play\" toolkit. The project aims to empower individuals to navigate their health journey on their own terms.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>We are now moving into the next phase of the project, where pilot studies will be rolled out across Europe. The experiences, expertise, and invaluable insights shared by patient organizations in Istanbul\u2014and cemented during our own ECPO symposium\u2014will form the very foundation of this testing phase.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Health is about so much more than weight.
