Als onderdeel van het team van de European Coalition for People Living with Obesity (ECPO), die met trots de rol vervult van <strong>Pati\u00ebnt Lead<\/strong> voor het European CarePath project gebruikten we deze krachtige sessie om te benadrukken hoe CarePath deze transitie actief aanpakt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ik verliet Istanbul met een diep gevoel van zowel optimisme als dringende ongeduld. Het is hoog tijd dat we bruggen bouwen tussen medisch toponderzoek en het werkelijke dagelijkse leven van de mensen die erdoor geraakt worden. In mijn rol als vertegenwoordiger van ECPO binnen het consortium, zet ik me in om ervoor te zorgen dat deze vertaling plaatsvindt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Politieke bezorgdheid en alledaagse stigmatisering<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Door mijn werk als voorzitter van de Noorse Vereniging voor Mensen met Obesitas (LFO) en mijn betrokkenheid bij ECPO, zie ik dagelijks hoe mensen met obesitas en gerelateerde cardiometabole aandoeningen door de samenleving worden ontvangen. We zien een oorverdovende politieke stilte en terughoudendheid rond een van de grootste volksgezondheidsproblemen van onze tijd. Al te vaak worden complexe biologische aandoeningen gereduceerd tot simplistische verhalen over \u201cpreventie\u201d en individuele levensstijlkeuzes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het is deze diepe onrechtvaardigheid, het dagelijkse stigma en de gefragmenteerde pati\u00ebntentrajecten waar we nu rechtstreeks tegenover staan. Zoals we tijdens ons symposium benadrukten, beschikken pati\u00ebnten over cruciale expertise die actief risico's in de gezondheidszorgsystemen moet beheersen, in plaats van slechts te dienen als emotionele anekdotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-horizontal is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-68a6192b wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Leven met een chronische aandoening gaat over veel meer dan medicatie: het is een dagelijkse, menselijke ervaring die diepgaand begrip, toegankelijke hulpmiddelen en de garantie dat de stem van de pati\u00ebnt daadwerkelijk gehoord wordt, vereist.<\/em><br>\u2014 <strong>Mari-Mette Graff<\/strong>, als Pati\u00ebntvertegenwoordiger van ECPO in CarePath<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"510\" height=\"510\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.carepath-ihi.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Mari-Mette-Graff-.jpg?strip=all\" alt=\"A woman with straight black hair, glasses, and bright pink lipstick smiles in a corridor. We moeten permanent afstappen van individuele schuld en toe naar structurele oplossingen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sterke gezondheidsverbindingen<\/strong>: Metabole en cardiovasculaire gezondheid zijn diep met elkaar verbonden. Obesitas komt zelden ge\u00efsoleerd voor; het is nauw verweven met de ontwikkeling van diabetes type 2 en hart- en vaatziekten. Dit vereist ge\u00efntegreerde zorgtrajecten, geen ge\u00efsoleerde interventies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Continu\u00efteit van zorg<\/strong>Hoewel moderne medische behandelingen baanbrekende nieuwe mogelijkheden bieden, kunnen klinische interventies alleen niet alles oplossen. De dringende noodzaak voorwaarts is het cre\u00ebren van duurzame zorgtrajecten en ondersteunende omgevingen die zorgen voor continu\u00efteit van zorg op lange termijn in het dagelijks leven.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CarePath: De kaart afstemmen op het terrein<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In de academische wereld en medisch onderzoek worden vaak prachtige kaarten getekend. Maar voor mij gaat projectwerk niet over theoretische modellen; het gaat erom het echte terrein waar pati\u00ebnten doorheen navigeren direct in onderzoeks- en zorgsystemen te brengen. <strong>De kaart moet overeenkomen met het terrein<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dit is precies de kloof die CarePath wil overbruggen. Opgericht door de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihi.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Innovatief Gezondheidsinitiatief (IHI)<\/a>, ons consortium ontwikkelt een flexibele, persoonsgerichte, digitale \u201cplug-and-play\u201d toolkit. Het project heeft tot doel individuen in staat te stellen hun gezondheidsreis op hun eigen voorwaarden vorm te geven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We gaan nu de volgende fase van het project in, waarin proefstudies in heel Europa worden uitgerold. De ervaringen, expertise en waardevolle inzichten die pati\u00ebntenorganisaties in Istanbul hebben gedeeld \u2013 en die tijdens ons eigen ECPO-symposium zijn vastgelegd \u2013 vormen de basis van deze testfase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gezondheid gaat over zoveel meer dan gewicht. Discussions among healthcare professionals, researchers, and patient organizations left no room for doubt: healthcare systems must stop treating chronic conditions in a fragmented, piecemeal manner.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>This shift was a core focus at <strong>ECPO\u2019s patient-centred symposium, \"Input to Impact \u2013 Patients as Risk Managers, not just storytellers\"<\/strong>. As part of the team at the European Coalition for People Living with Obesity (ECPO), which proudly holds the role of <strong>Patient Lead<\/strong> for the European CarePath project, we used this powerful session to highlight how CarePath actively addresses this transition.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I left Istanbul with a deep sense of both optimism and urgent impatience. It is high time we build bridges between top-tier medical research and the actual daily lives of the people it affects. In my role representing ECPO within the consortium, I am dedicated to ensuring this translation happens.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Political Apprehension and Everyday Stigma<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Through my work as leader of the Norwegian Association for People Living with Obesity (LFO) and my involvement with ECPO, I witness daily how individuals with obesity and related cardiometabolic conditions are met by society. We see a deafening political silence and apprehension surrounding one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. All too often, complex biological conditions are reduced to simplistic narratives about \"prevention\" and individual lifestyle choices.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>It is this deep injustice, the everyday stigma, and the fragmented patient pathways that we are now directly confronting. As we emphasized during our symposium, patients possess critical expertise that must actively manage risks in healthcare systems, rather than just serving as emotional anecdotes.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><em>Living with a chronic condition is about far more than medication \u2013 it is a daily, human experience that requires deep understanding, accessible tools, and a guarantee that the patient\u2019s voice is actually heard.<\/em><br>\u2014 <strong>Mari-Mette Graff<\/strong>, representing ECPO as Patient Lead in CarePath<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three Key Lessons From Istanbul<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The insights from ECO 2026 and the dialogue driving our \u00abInput to Impact\u00bb session underscore three vital principles that define the path forward for European healthcare:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>A complex biological reality:<\/strong> Obesity is fully recognized as a chronic, relapsing disease that requires long-term, medical, and holistic support over time. We must move permanently away from individual blame toward structural solutions.<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>Strong health interconnections<\/strong>: Metabolic and cardiovascular health are deeply linked. Obesity rarely occurs in isolation; it is closely intertwined with the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This demands unified healthcare pathways, not isolated interventions.<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>Continuity of care<\/strong>: While modern medical treatments offer ground-breaking new opportunities, clinical interventions alone cannot solve everything. The pressing need forward is creating sustainable healthcare pathways and supportive environments that enable long-term continuity of care in daily life.<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CarePath: Aligning the Map with the Terrain<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In academia and medical research, beautiful maps are often drawn. But for me, project work is not about theoretical models; it is about bringing the real terrain that patients navigate directly into research and healthcare systems. <strong>The map must align with the terrain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>This is exactly the gap CarePath aims to bridge. Foundedby the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihi.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Innovative Health Initiative (IHI)<\/a>, our consortium is developing a flexible, person-centered, digital \"plug-and-play\" toolkit. The project aims to empower individuals to navigate their health journey on their own terms.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>We are now moving into the next phase of the project, where pilot studies will be rolled out across Europe. The experiences, expertise, and invaluable insights shared by patient organizations in Istanbul\u2014and cemented during our own ECPO symposium\u2014will form the very foundation of this testing phase.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Health is about so much more than weight.
